Palembang
Palembang is located in the south of Sumatra. The city is set on the banks of the Musi river, the longest river in South Sumatra. Palembang has two museums. On the banks of Musi river there is a Municipal museum : Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II museum, administered by the Municipality of Palembang. The Balaputradewa museum, is located at km 5.5 Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. Both museums offer little for the tourist but the one on the way to the airport is the biggest and the best however there is a cracking guide at the Sultan Mahmud museum full of enthusiasm.
From the Sultan Mahamud museum located near the "famous bridge" is a fort from the days when the dutch owned Sumatra. This is now an army barracks but worth a look.
Also worth taking a trip along the Musi river, you can hire a boat adjacent to the bridge at a reasonable price.
There is a zoo but the animals aren't cared for very well. A crocodile and monkey in the same cage!
Accommodation, recommend the Novotel Palembang very modern with A1 staff.Night club down stairs busy on Thursday to Saturday. Resident band superb. Next door is a large shopping mall where you'll find everything in a western mall. Adjacent to the mall is a resturant called Volcano's, serves the best steak I have ever tasted.
